From 2018 to 2019, I collaborated with Pharmacy Quality Solutions (PQS) to create animated explainer videos that transformed highly technical scripts into engaging, accessible training content for EQUIPP®, a medication management and data analysis platform for pharmacy staff. By developing clear and approachable visual storytelling, I helped PQS communicate Medicare/Medicaid initiatives and software processes in a way that supported knowledge retention and encouraged pharmacy compliance. These videos positioned PQS as a forward-thinking tech company and contributed to their continued growth and strong reputation in digital learning.
PQS needed an engaging way to deliver instructional material about their EQUIPP® software—content that, while important, was heavily focused on procedures and regulatory concepts. To better connect with their diverse user base of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, they opted for short-form animated explainers (3–5 minutes) that would be easier to digest and more motivating than traditional screen-recorded tutorials. The videos aimed to improve software proficiency, support Medicare/Medicaid compliance efforts, and empower pharmacy staff to produce better patient outcomes through data-informed decisions.
After collaborative Zoom sessions with the scriptwriter, I created initial storyboard sketches in Photoshop, embedding these thumbnails directly into scripts for stakeholder review. Every video lesson would be woven together with a visual metaphor representing the topic, and the lessons would be supported by concrete graphics. Once approved, I used Illustrator to design reusable vector assets—characters, props, environments, and interface elements—balancing PQS's soft corporate palette with vibrant pastels and subtle gradients. Guided by PQS’s goals for diversity and approachability, I imported these Illustrator assets into After Effects, building adaptable puppet rigs for streamlined animation. Critically, every visual component was intentionally crafted to reinforce instructional clarity, ensuring animations remained focused, purposeful, and effective.
Utilizing Frame.io’s streamlined feedback tools, stakeholders efficiently reviewed and refined animation timing and pacing, maintaining an optimal balance between brevity and clarity. Changes were minimal due to thorough storyboard approvals, with iterations primarily focusing on ensuring videos felt punchy yet detailed enough for instructional effectiveness.
Through this project, I strengthened my ability to visually simplify complex concepts without sacrificing accuracy—essential for effective instructional design. Positive feedback from both industry insiders and external viewers highlighted the video's visual appeal and clarity, reinforcing the value of multimodal instructional content. The success of these animations supported PQS’s ongoing growth and credibility, demonstrating the tangible impact of thoughtfully designed instructional visuals.
